Thomas A. Dorsey Gospel Choir Award
The Thomas A. Dorsey Gospel Choir Award was initiated in the Spring of 2006. The recipient is selected by the music director and advisor. It is awarded to a student who has demonstrated dedication and leadership to the choir. In addition, one who has given special talents in assisting the choir director. The award will not be given every year, only when a unique person has shown these qualities.
This award is named in honor of Thomas A. Dorsey who is considered the father of gospel music. He composed over 1000 songs in his lifetime including “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Peace in the Valley.”
A plaque and an honorarium are given to the recipient.

2006 Recipient: Andrea Ogle
Andrea Ogle was born in Jamaica, West Indies and was raised in Queens, NY. Andrea is an education major and will graduate in December 2007 with a B.S. in Early Childhood Educ. & Childhood Education with a concentration in Mathematics. Some specific reasons she was selected for this award were because of her time and talents of scoring the challenging parts for “Hallelujah Chorus” and “Joyful, Joyful.” This saved the director hours of his time. She has served as the choir’s Vice-President for the past two years. She is the leader/choreographer of the Praise Dancers. She is a member of the Praise & Worship Team. Andrea has directed some of more challenging songs in recent years including “New Direction” and “Joyful, Joyful.” She also co-organized our first ad journal for the choir. She also assists with the website. She is a resident assistant and has also been involved with the Student Association.
