Choir Profile/History The Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir (PSGC) was organized in 1991 by students and has constantly emphasized the breadth and depth of gospel music in order to expose both PSU and the North Country to this genre. PSGC’s first performance was for the annual Kent State/Jackson State memorial ceremony back in 1991 at Plattsburgh State University. This commitment has been honored almost annually since PSGC’s birth. PSGC provide opportunities for Plattsburgh State students, alumni, faculty, staff, and persons from the local community to sing music from the gospel music traditions. Over 80% of the members are current Plattsburgh State students. The choir has experienced tremendous growth in the last five years. In the Spring of 2000 there were 18 members; Spring of 2003: 66 members. With added auditions to control the numbers, we currently have 60-70 members. The choir actively performs on campus, in the community, and throughout the region averaging 20 appearances each year. Within the past three years, the choir has performed in Albany, Arkansas,Boston, Chicago, Montreal, New York City, Toronto, and Tokyo. In February 2005 and 2006, we sang at the Flynn Center in Burlington, Vermont for their annual Gospelfest. In October of 2005, the choir completed a successful Chicago tour where the choir appeared on national television and various community/church venues. The choir’s repertoire ranges from a cappella, traditional Negro spirituals to contemporary gospel selections. In 2002, the choir added a Step Team, Praise Dance Team, and a Praise & Worship component to the choir. The choir released their debut CD in the Spring of 2003. Their second, double-length CD was released in the Spring of 2005. |
