Expanding upon Andre Malraux's concept of a Museum Without Walls, the Plattsburgh State Art
Museum has become an open visual art resource for the college and the Northern
Adirondack/Champlain Valley region. It forms an aesthetic network across the campus which makes
the arts part of the fabric of the college and community. Beyond a philosophy, the
"Museum Without Walls" has become the title of the installation program maintained by the Museum, which serves to display art throughout the campus.
The Plattsburgh Art Museum is comprised of over 4,600 works of art and artifacts
in several permanent collections ranging from antiquities to contemporary art. The collections are displayed within
our main galleries, a developing
sculpture park and exhibition areas throughout campus.
The Museum is the repository of one of the most complete collections in the
country of the works of Rockwell Kent and the home of the
Rockwell Kent Gallery and Collection.
A full, year round schedule of changing exhibitions
are offered to the college and public, that present a variety of contemporary
artists, collections, traveling exhibitions, faculty and student works. Venues are; the Rockwell Kent Gallery located in the Feinberg Library, the Burke Gallery and the Myers Lobby Gallery located in the Myers Fine Arts building. Additional special exhibitions,
sponsored by various sectors of the college are presented at locations around campus. A rigorous
visiting artist program is maintained
by the academic art department.
The Museum sponsors a variety of programs,
both public and academic, as well as publications,
membership and Museum Shop.
The Docent Program is an organization of volunteers dedicated to education, tours and hosting gallery exhibitions. The Museum offers an academic minor in Museum Studies and facilitates the
graduating art major's "Senior Exhibition".
Internships in Museum Operations and Research are also offered.
Galleries are open 7 days a week from 12 noon until 4 P.M.
We are closed Legal Holidays and December 24 through January 1.
The accessibility of art throughout campus depends on individual building schedules.
