21. Teke Janus figure, D.R.C., wood, 18" (45.7 cm)
  This Teke Janus figure was one of a small number of such figures referred to as Mpwau. Very little is known about these figures, whose power and/or use seems to have been related to political power. Teke figures usually had magic substances inserted into the hollows carved in their abdomens.
