Attribution in African art has oftentimes been problematic. In great civilisations there are in fact many recognized or known carvers. This is especially true, for example, among the Yoruba or Igbo. In other ethnic groups one may recognize the hand of a particular carver, who remains unknown otherwise. This beautiful female figure is carved by Osei Bonsu, one of the great, and recognized, carvers of the Ashanti.
