4. Bamana puppet head, Mali, wood and brass, 11 1/2" (29 cm)
This particular form of puppet head is called Merekun, a combination of the words Mere, the name of a legendary female figure, and kun, or head. The Merekun was part of an elaborate puppet performance given among the Bamana people covering many aspects of social life with a huge variety of characters. As times have evolved there are even puppets of Bob Marley and other popular contemporary figures.
