  The source and use of this figure remain unknown, though I have seen a Waja figures that bear a close resemblance to it, especially in the head. In any case it is a striking piece, both in the dymanics of its twisting head and open mouth, and the boldness with which it was carved. Propelled by some driving religious or emotional need, the carved has transformed a block of wood into a living being with an unhesitating directness and urgency.
