51. Jompre mask, Nigeria, wood, wax and Abrus seeds, 20" (51 cm)
  Originating from east central Nigeria, almost no scholarly information exists pertaining to this mask. Many of the peoples in this region had no extensive contact with the outside world until the 1960ís and the Biafran War. Lacking the great refinement of Baule sculpture, it has taken the Western eye a long time to appreciate the power and particular beauty of masks such as this.
