54. Toma mask, Liberia, wood and metal, 20" (51 cm)
This particular type of Toma mask is known as Nyanbai, the wife of the great forest spirit, Landai. Nyanbai was worn over the male dancerís face, and this mask generally helped out at initiation rites and at important funerary services or in times of crisis.
