68. Yombe figure with French jacket, D.R.C., wood and pigments, 11 1/2" (29 cm)
  The use of this old Yombe figure with the French jacket is unknown. It was probably carved as a gift or to sell to a European. Whether as a token of friendship or respect, or an object of commerce, it demonstrates the value attributed to such objects despite vast cultural differences. The exoticism of such works had great appeal, and as Pliny said 2 millenia ago, “Something new is always coming out of Africa.”
