7. Baule Bo usu, figure for hunting, Cote d’Ivoire,

In her book “Baule: African Art Western Eyes” Susan Vogel has written the following about this figure: “Though bush spirits are all wild and non-human, their sculptures always have the features of ideal people. (The spirit might become angered otherwise). Here the exceptionally fine scarifications on the stomach, the high coiffure, and braided beard contribute to an image of a meticulous, highly civilised man. The prominent pectorals and soft belly suggest a mature man with all that implies of advanced hunting knowledge and skill. The erect carriage and smooth skin suggest the strength of youth. Such figures do not usually last more than a generation since their devotions are personal and are usually discontinued after the death of the person who established it.”
