8. Kongo figure, Dem. Republic of Congo, wood and glass, 12" (30.5 cm)
  The iconography and use of this figure is open to interpretation. Among the Kongo the dog is the symbolic imtermediary with the spirit world. In this statue the remains of a hallucenogenic root chewed by the shamans is visible in the mouth, and it was probably held by the right arm, long since broken off. This may be a portrait of the shaman himself, being carried into the spirit world by the symbolic dog and the magic root.
