9. Dan Bird mask, Liberia, wood, 16 1/8" (40 cm)
  Called Gegon, this mask, as far as we have been able to determine, represents the hornbill, a sacred bird for the Dan, and one responsible for the bringing of palm nuts and palm oil, a major source of sustenance. Though more recently danced for entertainment, in earlier times the mask may have sang songs and parables about the hornbill.
