Arctic Donbass
Engraving, Bequest of Sally Kent Gorton, P52000.400.11

This is how it was called by Donetsk miners, who were the first to come to the Island of Spitsbergen to extract coal for the ships of the north. Aysfiord Gulf. Soviet miner Barentsburg. Black night and black coal and white “tough” rocks’ peaks. During the navigation months, loading is done by all hands on the deck while the pump throws out about 500 thousand tons into the hold. Before now, here, Admiral Makarov was one of the first who went here on the ship, moving itself. Now the rocks, which are hidden by the Polar night, are walked by men.

Literary notes of Andrei Merkulov.
