Winter Has Come
Engraving, Bequest of Sally Kent Gorton,
In 1936 with the expedition of Taymir for the first time I saw high latitudes. On new land the winter has come in an hour during the summer, clean snow has lain on the deck. On that voyage went 82 degrees and 14 minutes NL (North latitude) and “covered” the whole island, erasing from the map the nonexistent land, which was a huge iceberg. The Captain Kasov stayed on the bridge, the one who shot in “Moorman” (Murmansk) the papanintsev from ice floe...”Taymir” and “Persey” were happy ships. They “Pulled out” from the fog many but unexplored straits; to me as an artist they gave the opportunity to see them.
