Visiting History
Engraving, Bequest of Sally Kent Gorton, P52000.400.23

Museum in between the ice. Here on the Rudolf Island where the Ziegler expedition could not make it to. Next to the Teplitz Bay, the traces of the richest, and most equipped failed expedition has remained, which ended with misfortune. When the army retreats, the remains of the ship America is lying in the bottom of the bay. The last point of land before the North Pole. Our first planes to go to North Pole. The last piece of land and farthest point of land that I have painted. This place was opened by Pier and Vinepeck. Pier was also a painter and dedicated an engraving to this land of ice horrors, fill with bears and hopelessness. I was also drawing ice columns like castle towers protecting nature’s fortress. But this land, even if it remained tough and difficult stopped being frightening for us.

Literary notes of Andrei Merkulov.
