In Polar Night
Engraving, Bequest of Sally Kent Gorton, P52000.400.16

He swam with us on “Perseus” and his name was “Seaman”. He was a diver. He came from Svalbard, but before he was the leader during the rescue from “Malygin” Nobel expedition. There is a puppy sitting near by-it is wisdom and childhood in the face Arctic. It was looking to the polar sky and I still cannot understand what it could see on the moon. The puppy was very tender and came to my feet and tried to keep them warm in a cold cabin. It was artist-formalist and it liked to lie in the corner, so you could see only its paw because it was all black. I’ll never forget it and all dogs who were my friends. In arctic we consider them not only as dogs. Even now when the plane lands they are the first who run to the plane’s wings in order to greet and congratulate you on arrival.
