As an artist, I am intrigued in the instinctual need we have, as humans, to establish a visual identity from one another. I study different cultures and unique visual cues developed to symbolize and interpret their lives and the world around them. This includes patterns, architecture, clothing, and decorative and fine arts. My work extracts samples of these very rooted, visual representations of people around the world. From culture to culture and from the ancient to the modern day, they are combined into one work. I challenge myself to unify and fuse these elements within a piece, and I attempt to eliminate distinction between one culture and another. The intent for the work is to invoke feelings of familiarity, connection, and nostalgia, without allowing the viewer to recognize what elicits these feelings. The viewer may relate on a very personal level, referencing their own culture, memories, dreams, and beliefs; but, additionally, in a very broad sense, they relate to life in general and to what defines us as human.
