Collection Of The Artist
Jacques Payette was born in Montréal, Québec, in 1951. He had no formal art training when he began, in the early 1970s, to exhibit in local galleries. His work is now shown across the country and he has enjoyed many solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows. He has been the recipient of grants and awards and has been written about in many newspaper reviews and publications that deal with the arts.
Costume in this painting is seen as decoration, but also as personal architecture, and implies the power of symbol and perception. The sensitive use of colour in his muted palette allows the artist to suggest just enough for us to fill in the rest, just enough information for us to feel the lush silk fabric and the wispy transparency of the dotted swiss.
