Collection Of The Artist
Allain was born in Montréal, Québec, in 1951. He received his BFA at the University of Ottawa in 1982 and his MFA at Hunter College in New York in 1986. Sol Lewitt considers Allain one of the leading artists of his generation. Since his graduation from Hunter, he has lived and worked in Brooklyn and has shown in many important galleries and museums in North America.
Allain's work continues to reconcile the implicit with the explicit, the abstract with the figurative. Unlike the other work of Allain's in this exhibition, this small yet monumental work has a great deal of surface interest. The grid-like marks across the picture plane, the orange tones revealed beneath the contrasting blue pigment, and the energetically crosshatched surface set up a lively vibration.
