Oil on canvas - 24 x 24 inches
Collection of Anthony Collins
Martin Bureau was born in St. Ubald, Québec, in 1972 and received his BFA from University of Québec at Montréal in 1996. In spite of the short period of time since his graduation, he has shown in many group exhibitions and has already been the featured artist in four solo exhibitions, which attests to his skill and dedication.
This figurative painting owes much to the history of abstract painting in its rich texture and painterly surface. The picture plane contains a number of rectangular shapes and is composed with a keen emphasis on symmetry - the repetition of the figures dressed in similar clothing of the same color, the corresponding screens with matching beams of light. The bench cleverly defines the foreground and anchors the composition in the abstract space.
