Tom Dean was born in Markdale, Ontario, in 1947. He first began his studies in Physics but moved to Montréal, Québec, in the late 60s to pursue visual arts at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia University), where he received his BFA in 1979. He was a founding member of the avant-gardeart centre Véhicule Art Inc and he also published Beaux Arts magazine with fellow artist Stephen Lack. Dean was Canada's representative to the Venice Biennial in 1999. He has exhibited in some 18 solo exhibitions and in almost countless group exhibitions. He has been the subject of many essays and articles in important art publications. His work has been collected by most major Canadian museums, including the National Gallery of Canada.
