Collection Of The Artist
Demers uses an interesting choice and mixture of media. These works are reverse landscapes in which the foreground becomes the subject. The debris he focuses on suggests, not only 20th century archaeology, but also the metamorphosis of the landscape. Demers' handling of the material and the high horizon line serve to emphasize his interest in these tangible accretions and invite us to consider the strata underneath and how each layer relates to a different period in 20th century human history.
The cities and the industries depicted are not related. They are, instead, emblematic and totally interchangeable and ambiguous.
