Man with Teapot, 1999|
Oil on canvas - 36 x 30 inches
Collection of Ms. Paula Wyant
Paul Fenniak was born in Toronto in 1965 and received his BFA degree at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1988. He went on to receive his MFA from Concordia University in Montréal, Québec, in 1994. Fenniak continues to live and work in Montréal. He was the subject of a recent solo exhibition in New York City at the Forum Gallery.
The subject, about to either make or pour a cup of tea, seems alone, mysterious, uncertain, and removed from our experience. The cup defines the foreground and the figure's triangular shaped hand creates the space on the other side of the table which, without it would be a flat incomprehensible shape in the foreground. Fenniak's lively interest in psychology is reminiscent of the haunting quality in the work of Andrew Wyeth.
