Tom Hopkins was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, in 1944. He studied at Mount Allison University and holds an MFA degree from Concordia University in Montréal where he taught from 1983 to 1997 and where he now works.
"I always think of paintings to be, to a certain degree, projection screens. I'll make the paintings according to my ideas but I don't have a need to actually have that idea accepted by the viewer. They can have their own interpretation, their own projection."… "For me, tension is the basis for all life. Certainly tension between two or three colours in a painting is what makes the painting vibrant, all contrasts - warm/cool, broad areas against detail, organic against mechanical….."
