Olomouc is an old city near the eastern border of the Czech Republic. I had heard that it was beautiful, and I traveled there in winter to take photographs.
The days were cold and short; the skies perpetually threatened snow. Without the drama of sunlight and shadow, I had to learn to build photo-graphs with a quieter eloquence, juxtaposing greys softened by distance and mist. Rather than attempting to document the city, I pushed myself to find images that somehow expressed my own emotions and spirit. I searched for a visual vocabulary that connected with my childhood memories of snowbound cities, grandparents' tales of Eastern Europe, and the silence of having no language in common.
Undertaken at a difficult time in my life, the journey to Olomouc proved ultimately redemptive as I realized the beauty in a stark and lonely winter landscape.
