Lucky Again is a two-plate intaglio print, made in an edition of eighteen copies. The intaglio process can be done using a variety of materials, in this case, zinc. I used both drypoint (drawing directly with a steel needle onto the plate) and etching (using acid to "bite" the lines into the plate) to make this print. Like much of my other work, this image is about day-to-day magic, the kind of magic that is easy to miss if one does not look closely, or listen carefully. The figure in the print is a maker of potions, a scientist, a fortune-teller. A bird messenger is whispering something in his ear, a crown hovers overhead, the man need only reach up to wear it. Seeds, enchanted objects themselves, float nearby, part of these mysterious goings on.

I am interested in creating this sort of open-ended narrative, which invites the viewer into a world that may be at once strange and familiar. The processes of printmaking, which I love so dearly, have given me a language in which to tell these stories. The rich and unique mark-making inherent in the medium, the ability to layer and build an image in stages, the multiple itself, are all part of that language. It is a pleasure to use that language and to watch my students learn its nuances. The magnificent visual and conceptual discoveries made are well-worth the labor we devote to the process.
