Senior Exhibition 2004 Heather Gordon
The creative process is very important in producing successful works of art. I find that sometimes the process is more important than the actual end result. When I begin working on a piece, I usually have some concept in mind and some idea of what direction I would like to take it. Often, I find that as I execute the idea, it transforms itself into something other than what I was expecting. I try to let my intuition guide me, allowing it to take me in different directions until I feel that it is “right.”

The process itself is therapeutic and lends itself to a purely cathartic experience. The simple act of molding and shaping the clay with my hands is so liberating. It allows me to express my emotions onto the clay and to reroute negative emotions into something more positive.

I am very interested in how emotions can be given form, and in return, create an atmospheric quality. My goal as an artist is to have people see my work for what it really is, letting them be the judge of what emotion is hidden within the contours of a piece.
