Streetlight Flickering Out
oil on canvas
30 x 32

The creation of texture through color relationships and brushstrokes fascinates me. It allows me to investigate the visual vibration that occurs when complimentary colors and warm and cool tones are next to each other. My recent subject matter has shifted to people, specifically, the psychology involved with a person sitting alone in his or her own thoughts. There is something about the look in their eyes that allows you to delve deep into their fears and comforts. Often my subjects are placed in large, overwhelming spaces such as in their own head where they are in a huge world of their own creation. I also try to include my dreams in the subject matter. While the subject matter may seem surreal, I draw out everything before I paint it. Drawing is a huge part of my work and I paint from my drawings of still lives, self-portraits, and drawings of models.
